Climbing School: A great bunch of climbers helping ordinary mortals experience discomfort, victory, pain and gain! Glad I went. Many thanks to all that helped. Hopefully I'll see you on the mountain or rock. Cynde PS Who gets dog patrol next year?

Twenty-nine students participated in the 2003 Chemeketan Climb School. The school included two classroom sessions at the Chemekeden and a weekend field session. Classroom sessions included: Membership (K.Braasch), Mountain Slide Show (P.McClellan), Climbing Fitness (M.Rudy), Equipment (J.Croft), Field Session Gear (M.Newby), Food for Climbing (P.Otley), Field Session Logistics (P.McClellan) and Knot Practice (assistants). Thank you to J.Picchi for serving refreshments during our classroom sessions. Participants either car-pooled or rode in two 14-passenger vans. Gear was hauled in three trucks provided by (S.Phillips, R.Mack, C. Alte). The Saturday field session focused on rock climbing skills at Horsethief Butte State Park near The Dalles. Assistant leaders and helpers guided groups of six students through the many stations prepared and manned by the climb leaders. Organization was facilitated by small laminated schedules and a multitude of two-way radios. Evening camp was made at nearby Hess Park while a jovial large black dog frolicked about greeting participants. A specially arranged pizza/pasta buffet at Spooky’s Pizza Parlor in The Dalles gave participants a welcome opportunity to sit and share the experiences of the day. Unfortunately, the aforementioned dog chose this opportunity to shred three tents along with their contents. Arrangements were made by the group to accommodate the victims for the night. A late season snowfall above 2500 feet prompted a last minute change of plans. Amazingly, all participants and leaders were redirected from Timberline Lodge to the White River Canyon Sno Park, several miles east of Government Camp. Following the hard day of self-arrest practice and tromping through deep snow, the group reconvened in a downstairs banquet room at the Zig Zag Inn, where the owner had prepared coffee and ice cold water. Climb certificates were awarded before the group returned to Salem. School coordinator, Steve Dougherty, credits the success of this year’s school with the great turnout of leaders, assistants and helpers. I had a great time. The name should change for the Saturday trip as we only spent the last hour actually rock climbing. Everything ran as smooth as could be imagined. All the instructors really knew their stuff and were able to work with us to transfer the knowledge. I hope to put some of the skills to use soon on Mt Hood, hopefully I won't need to all of the skills we learned!!

The Hess Park stay was an experiment. It seemed more protected from the wind and was more private for us, but there is more parking at Spearfish and more flat ground for camping. Perhaps Spearfish would work better next year.

When the weather is iffy for Sunday's snow session, it would be good to arrange a rendezvous at the Government Camp rest area. This area has good cell phone coverage, we have a small room for people to put on their boots and snow bibs and jackets, and we can check out the White River Canyon conditions on the way. Then, we can make the call whether to continue up to Timberline or to return to White River Canyon for the session.

This is my second year of climb school, having taken my other daughter last year. As I can confirm, it gets better every year, thanks a lot to Steve Dougherty and his planning. I, and my two daughters, are looking forward to back packing and mountaineering with our good friends Tom Weimer and Dave Hayden. Thanks Chemeketans for a great event!

Climb School was very fun this year. I was a student last year so this was my second trip to climb school. I really liked going to the snow-park. It provided lots of room to spread out and it was nice having the different varieties of terrain for the training. I commend everyone that worked to get us all gathered after the location change. It was also nice meeting at the Zig Zag Inn, rather than the lodge.

Climb school was a great success! The instructors were highly skilled and taught well. I was amazed at the level of organization provided by Steve Dougherty. I learned more than I thought possible in a short time frame. The class taught me to enjoy the mountain while exercising caution. Thank you so much to everyone who assisted. We had a great team! Patty and Randy – hope to see you at the gym or on the mountain.
