Jan 10, 2004 -- Ray Benson XC Ski Tour, South Loop
Steve Dougherty ~ Jan 11, 2004
Eleven skiers left snow covered Salem and skied the South Loop of the Ray Benson Snow Park in spring like conditions. We started the ski at 10:30 a.m. The temperature warmed quickly from just above freezing to about 36 degrees. Winds were calm. Participants arrived at the Brandenburg Shelter at 1 p.m. where they sat in the midday sun for a 30-minute lunch break enjoying the scenic view of Mt. Washington. After departing the shelter the group headed in the direction of Hayrick Butte then north on the Pacific Crest Trail before completing the trip on the South Loop Trail. We arrived at the parking lot at 3:00 p.m. Snow conditions were fast; about two feet of unconsolidated snow covered with a thin crust. Participants were Alan Phillips, Stacey Petersen, Kathy Jameson, Colleen Wilcox, Rick Wilcox, Sue Nelson, Tony Crisi, Chuck, Assistant Cynde Alt and Leader Steve Dougherty.

Thanks Steve for giving me assistant status . . . I just stepped up when the request was made to carry a radio and be first in and last out. My first nordic trip with the Chemekatans and loved doing something different with the group. It's so great to meet new folks of all ages. I am truly inspired by those in their 60's and 70's that get out there. Nice relaxed pace with wonderful weather. A real treat after the winter storm in Salem has kept many of us from our outdoor training. Very organized smooth trip. Thanks to all. Cynde Alt

My second Chemeketan trip and it was wonderful! The amazing blue sky and jagged mountain tops were a site to behold. The snow was a little icy but it only helped to get me in shape and prepared for future events. I also enjoyed the company. It is always exciting to be around people with such varied backgrounds and experiences. Thanks to Steve for organizing and leading the trip. I felt safe but not over scheduled. I had a great time. It was a plesant outing. It was fun to bask in the sun at the shelter. The light and warmth was wonderful while taking in the panoramic views of the mountains and tree lines.. I really enjoyed the last leg of the South Loop back to the parking lot when I developed a steady consistent rhythm, then accelerated. I think I was the first one back to the parking lot. It was a good workout. I appreciated being with everyone on the trail.
