Jan 29, 2011 -- Beginner Snowshoe - Potato Hill Sno-Park
Steve Dougherty ~ Jan 29, 2011
This was the second of two beginner snowshoe trips led by Steve Dougherty this winter. More than 50 participated in the two mile/900 foot climb up Potato Hill. Participants made history, since Steve claims this to be an unofficial participation record for a Chemeketan Snowshoe. The snow was well consolidated due to the recent rains and high freezing level over the past several weeks. Vincent Dunn led the way, while the other leaders: Jane Morris, Cathy Lazarus and Dave Carter spaced themselves amongst the group. The slight chance of showers did not materialize and participants enjoyed distant views, mild temperatures and only partly cloudy skies for most of the day. We departed the parking lot at 10:30 a.m. and nearly all were enjoying their lunch at the end of the road by 12:15 p.m. Mt. Jeffereson, Three Fingered Jack, Mt Washington, the Three Sisters and Diamond Peak were all plainly visible on this seven mountain day. The ground in most of the forested areas was free of snow; very unusual for late January at this elevation. A group photo with Jefferson and Three Fingered Jack in the background was taken at 12:30 p.m. before the group reversed course and headed back down. Most were back to the parking lot and departing by 2 p.m. Everyone was back to the parking lot by 2:30 p.m. At least ten were counting this trip as a qualifier for their Chemeketan membership. Congratulation to all participants for successfully completing the challenging course.

It was a challenging uphill trek but we could go at our own pace. Wow-the final destinaton was worth it for the views! Steve did a great job ordering sunny and clear weather for maximum viewing:) It was a good snow shoe trip and we are beginners.

Well organized trip! I heard ;many people talking about returning on their own and that is just what this type of group is all about. Thanks to all for the camaraderie and the Chemeketans for their contribution to our total enjoyment.

It is so wonderful and uplifting to be around people who enjoy the outdoors. I enjoy getting to know people, sharing stories and of course snowshoeing. A great trip.

This was my first trip with the Chemeketans and I was duly impressed! Everybody was very friendly and Steve could not have done a better job organizing the day. He must have a hot line to the weather gods, because the weather could not have been better!! I thoroughly enjoyed the hike and the views of the mountains were stupendous. I'll be back, for sure! Thanks Steve and Vincent and Jane and Dave and Cathy for very, very fun and memorable day. :)

I had a great time. The weather was so great and the people were so friendly, how could you not have a great time. Steve did such a great job of organizing and everything went so smoothly. Thanks Steve.

What a beautiful day we had for this trip. The trek up the hill through the trees was beautiful but the view at the top was magnificent. How often can you sit and eat lunch and be almost close enough to touch the mountains. Steve does a fantastic job of organizing and I think everyone had a great time.
