Dec 17, 2011 -- Beginner Snowshoe - Maxwell Sno-Park
Steve Dougherty ~ Dec 18, 2011
This year's beginner snowshoe from the Maxwell Sno-Park to the Mountainview Shelter was done by 21 participants. The group enjoyed outstanding weather; blue skies and unseasonably warm temperatures. From the shelter we could see Three Fingered Jack, Washington and the Three Sisters. Just the top of Mt Jefferson peaked over the ridge north of the shelter. A foot or two of snow covered the ground in most places. The few small stretches of the trail that were bare of snow did not dampen the enjoyment of the participants. The conditions were so pleasant at the shelter that most participants spent the lunch break lounging outside of the cabin. The trip was led by Steve Dougherty and Dave Carter and assisted by Mark Olson, Cathy Lazarus, Stephen Rockford, Michael Rudy and Mary Wandell. Remaining participants were: Karen Albers, Mark Albers, Curtis Baker, Weixuan Baker, Chris Fisher, Dave Foulger, Brett Milliken, Debby Niewald, Shannon O'Shea, Mike Pennington, Margaret Saxe, Deirdre Sevier, Bill Tourtellotte and Rosanna Wilson.

Perhaps a bit warmer than expected and not as much snow as one might have wished for but the views were great at the shelter and it was great getting to know new snowshoers. Thanks to Steve for another well organized event.

I've been snowshoeing a little for the last two winters. This was my first with a Chemeketan group. It was great time getting to know others. I'm a beginner particularly in learning how to pack for each activity. So, I learn a lot by just trying out different pack arrangements and seeing what gear others use. I plan to snowshoe as much as possible for the conditioning value as much as seeing the outdoors and meeting others. Thanks to all of the assistants and Steve for your teaching/guiding etc.

This was my 2nd Chemeketan outing. Had a great time getting to know everyone. Heard some great stories, great advice, and have some new friends. All the leaders were great, particularly Steve. He's so well organized. Shocking how closely we stayed on schedule. Would have been nice to have more snow but there was enough to make it enjoyable. The clear blue skies were a nice change of pace from Salem.

Now to send off my application for membership!

Perfect weather and excellent company made this Chemeketan outing go by far too quickly. Thanks go out to everyone for a great trek, especially Steve and the other leaders who kept us organized and on schedule! I took a few photos that day and here are the best of the bunch: https://picasaweb.google.com/bmilliken/20111217SnowshoeingAtMaxwellSnoParkChemeketans?authuser=0&authkey=Gv1sRgCJGrw73QpZqy9gE&feat=directlink
