The Ultralight Skills Practice was conducted in a large shop located on the leader's property. Participants learned several knots necessary for setting up a "poly tarp" before making and pitching a poly tarp on the lawn. Next we each made a "Cat Stove" from a Fancy Feast cat food can. We used the stoves to cook a one pot dinner from a selection of quick dinners one can buy at the grocery store. We also reviewed a variety of backpacking stoves and discussed their advantages and disadvantages. Several methods for filtering and and chemically treating water was demonstrated. Finally, each participant made a fire starter kit from Vaseline and cotton balls and stored them in tiny containers before foraging for firewood and building a small fire.
