Apr 28-29, 2001 -- Intro to Smith Rock
Steve Dougherty ~ Apr 30, 2001
A big thanks to Mike and Jim Rudy for setting all of the top ropes and helping to insure the safety of our group. Thanks also to Alan Phillips and Debra Marsh, both assistants, for coaching belaying. Thanks also to Sue Nelson, Cindi Ewert and Jason Pfau for their help coaching belaying and giving tips to rest of the group. A trip like this really requires lots of experienced hands and watchful eyes ... I am truly grateful to all who contributed and would very much enjoy having your services again next year.

Thanks to all for humoring Beth as she got her first real taste of rock climbing.

A special thanks to Mike Rudy, the ever present personality, living life to the fullest. Mike your enthusiasm is infectious, your celebration of your own achievements and those of others was fun to watch, your "tips" on climbing were very helpful ... I learned some things, I know you put a lot of time and energy into this trip, rest your tired body and heal your hands!

Steve, it was a great outing for me. First year climbers figured things out pretty fast and were doing 5.9's. Incredible! Appreciate you and Mike giving me instruction and a taste of Sport leading. I'm setting bolts up in my garage to practice getting the sequence down with setting the rope at the anchor and also placing and cleaning the quickdraws using a rope.

Steve, I had a great time. The climbing was really good and the company was even better. The more I climb with Mike, the more I enjoy it. I guess he kind of grows on you (like a bad habit). Jim was a big help as well. The only complaint I have is that I already have enough expensive hobbies. Rock climbing and all the gear that is required will probably send me to the poor house (of course I can always just follow the Rudy's and mooch off of them.) Thanks for setting this trip up, it was excellent. I met a lot of neat folks, and look forward to climbing with all of you again.

Steve: Thanks to you and all of the other helpers and assistants. Tammy and I had a great time and learned a great deal about rock climbing and safety. Thanks for showing us the short cut to Adit Rock, Jim. Mike, keep those falls short will you!? Also I'll practice the fingertip advice you shared with us. I hope everyone enjoyed the various impersonations of Elvis Presley that was exhibited towards the end of each of the days. Keep shaken a leg everyone. I'll be seeing you at other climbs with the club. You're a great bunch of people. Thanks again.
